Brazilian blow out aftercare for long, thick hair: what to do first 72 hours
By Salon Estevan | September 7, 2026
One of the best compliments I hear after a Brazilian Blowout is simple: you were really impressed, and you left with tips you could actually use at home. Keep it simple for the first 48 to 72 hours. Don’t get your hair wet, don’t tie it tight, and don’t sweat it out. That window is what protects the smooth finish and the shine you just paid for.
Quick reminder: At Salon Estevan in Gilbert, I offer the Brazilian Blowout as a smoothing treatment that reduces frizz and adds shine. For various hair lengths and types, it takes about 10 minutes in the chair, but the aftercare is what makes it last.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep it dry, loose, and crease-free
If your hair is long and thick, the biggest risk in the first two days is accidental creasing. Water, sweat, and tight tension can set dents that are hard to smooth back out. In Gilbert, our hot, dry summers make it tempting to run errands and knock out an outdoor workout right after your appointment. Give yourself a buffer. Your hair will thank you.
Do this right away
- Wear your hair down. If you must pull it back, use a very loose low pony or a loose braid.
- Comb gently with a wide-tooth comb, especially around the nape where long hair loves to kink.
- If you shower, clip hair up and keep steam off it as much as you can.
- Sleep with hair loose on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and dents.
Avoid this for 48 to 72 hours
- No washing. No “just a quick rinse.”
- No tight hair ties, clips, hats, or headbands that press a line into the hair.
- No heavy sweating. In South Gilbert, that can mean yard work, long school runs in peak heat, or a workout class.
- No salt spray or texture products that rough up the cuticle.
And watch for monsoon dust. If you get caught outside and your hair picks up grit, don’t scrub it. Use a soft brush, then smooth a tiny amount of lightweight leave-in through mid-lengths to ends until you can wash.
Days 3 to 7: your Brazilian Blowout should feel smooth, shiny, and easy
This is the week when people usually tell me their hair feels “so smooth, shiny, and easy to manage.” That result comes from two habits: gentle washing and careful drying. Long, thick hair holds water. If it stays damp too long, it can puff back up and lose that sleek finish.
Your first wash matters
When you do wash, stick to sulfate-free, keratin-safe shampoo and conditioner. Use cool-to-warm water, not hot. After the shower, squeeze water out with your hands, then pat with a towel. Don’t rough it up like you’re drying a dog.
Heat styling is fine, but be smart
Blow dry in sections. Start at the roots, then work down. A paddle brush usually works best for thick hair, and a wide-tooth comb is great right out of the shower. If you flat iron, keep your passes minimal and use heat protectant. The goal is smooth, not cooked.
Pool, ocean, and Arizona sun: the 1 to 2 week protection plan
Chlorine and salt water can strip and dry the hair, which is the opposite of what you want after a brazilian blowout treatment. I recommend avoiding pools and the ocean for at least 1 to 2 weeks. If you can’t avoid it, do a quick pre-rinse with fresh water, apply a leave-in protectant, then rinse again right after.
South Gilbert reality check: If you’re a commuter or an active parent, try to schedule your appointment early morning, late afternoon, or on the weekend so you’re not walking straight into peak heat and sweat right after.
If you’re driving in from Chandler, Mesa, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, or Tempe, this aftercare stays the same. Keep hair dry and loose at first, then keep your wash routine gentle and keratin-safe.
Products I want you using after a brazilian blow out (and what to toss)
If you’re searching hair treatments near me or a hair salon near me because you’re tired of frizz, the product swap is where most people win or lose. Go sulfate-free and keratin-safe right away. Sulfates can fade the smoothness faster, and some “deep clean” shampoos are basically strip washes in disguise.
Keep
- Sulfate-free, keratin-safe shampoo and conditioner
- Lightweight leave-in conditioner (mid-lengths to ends)
- Heat protectant any time you blow dry or flat iron
Pause or limit
- Clarifying shampoo (use only when truly needed)
- Sea salt sprays and gritty texture powders
- Alcohol-heavy hairsprays that leave hair feeling crunchy
Not sure what you’ve got at home is safe? Bring it in or send me the ingredient list. I’d rather answer a quick product question than have you wonder why your result doesn’t feel as smooth as day one.
If something feels “off, ” reach out, and I’ll help you fix it fast
A little extra volume at the roots is normal, especially in our dry Gilbert air. What I don’t want is you fighting dents, odd bends, or unexpected roughness after you’ve done the work to get smooth hair. I’m big on explaining the process patiently and giving real directions, because that’s how you keep the results.
“He also explains the best ways to keep your hair healthy, things no other stylist ever told me.”

Maintenance timing: I usually like a check-in and maintenance touch-up every 3 to 4 months, especially for long, thick hair that’s prone to frizz at the ends.
If you’re also looking for hair styling near me or even a hair cut near me that works with your new smooth texture, I can pair your Brazilian Blowout with a shape that dries faster and lays better.
If you found me by searching brazillian blowout near me or brazilian blowout near me, welcome. I’m in South Gilbert near the Greenfield corridor, and I’ve been doing this for a long time. Call or email, and let me know what your hair is doing, what products you used, and what day you’re on post-treatment.
